We are expecting to see a bit of rain over the next 24 hours from Riwaka through to Golden Bay as MetService has put an Orange Heavy Rain Warning in place for this area.

We suggest clearing your drains and gutters around your home, and driving cautiously if you are out and about.

This is a fairly similar event to Sunday/Monday of this week. Expect up to 150mm behind Collingwood, Tākaka, Mārahau and Riwaka. The ranges behind Richmond and Nelson may get up to approximately 80mm. The worst of the rain will be from midnight tonight through to early morning Friday.

We are not expecting large floods from this event, and an annual flood would be at the upper end of our expectations for Golden Bay, Riwaka and Brooklyn catchments, and less for the Waimea and Maitai. Peak rainfall intensity is forecast to be 15 to 25mm/hr and may cause localised surface flooding or flooding in small streams. The rainfall totals and intensities are not likely to trigger widespread landslips.

High tides occur around 3am and mid-afternoon, and are around 1m below a large spring tide level. The barometric pressure is not particularly low, and the wind being north/north-easterly and of moderate strength, we’re not expecting issues from storm surge or wave run-up.

In short, it is another moderate weather pattern that should generally provide further useful rain to dry areas without damaging floods.
